KDDI to Deploy LTE; Selects Hitachi, Nortel for Core Network Equipment
December 05, 2008
Japan's KDDI announced on December 3 that the company has decided to deploy LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology for its next-generation mobile communications network, Nikkei Electronics reported. Furthermore, KDDI has selected Hitachi, teaming with Nortel Networks, for the supply of core networking solutions. Hitachi and Nortel will provide an overlay to KDDI's existing CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) network by means of a new EPC (Evolved Packet Core) featuring Nortel's MME (Mobility Management Entity), serving gateway, PDN (Packet Data Node) gateway, core network nodes and devices, and O&M (Orientation and Mobility) devices. KDDI expects to select an LTE wireless base station vendor in 2009 and finish the development of LTE core network and base stations in 2010.
